Career Counseling & Testing Services

Choosing an academic major can be challenging! Approximately 80% of students will change their major at least once during their academic career. Career counseling can help students explore who they are and how they can choose the best possible major and occupation for them.

What is Career Counseling?

Career counseling focuses on who you are as a whole person as you engage in the process of career exploration. Career counseling assists students interested in choosing an academic major or graduate program, identifying potential careers or areas of professional interest, or working to integrate their academic and/or professional pursuits with their broader life choices.

Career counseling might include individual career counseling sessions, career assessments and/or participation in career related workshops or groups.

See the Academic & Career Services Event List for information about on-going workshops and other events.

Who are Career Counselors?

Career counselors at the Student Counseling Service (SCS) are licensed professional counselors or psychologists who specialize in helping students find satisfying majors and occupations. Career counselors help students align their values, interests and preferences with their academic, career and life goals.

What can you expect when you meet with a Career Counselor?

The initial meeting will be an opportunity for you to share your concerns with your counselor. Your counselor will ask you several questions to gain a better idea of how career counseling would most benefit you. Your counselor may ask you to take an assessment to help identify your interests or personality preferences. Typically, students will then meet with the counselor for two to four additional sessions; however this is based on individual need. During these meetings, the career counselor will help you better understand all of the information that you learn about yourself and guide you in using this information to make a satisfying choice of major or occupation.

Career Testing and Assessment

The Student Counseling Service has multiple assessments that can be utilized to help students reach their goal of choosing a major or occupation. Some of the most commonly used measures are the Strong Interest Inventory, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, and Career Liftoff, but many other measures are available as well. Most of the testing can be done from wherever a student has internet access.

Discover

DISCOVER is an interactive, comprehensive, web-based career planning program designed to help students research careers and identify suitable majors. DISCOVER provides initial career assessments and a wealth of information on college majors, occupations, schools, internships and job search skills.

Students can access DISCOVER through the SCS homepage. Once students complete the interests, abilities and values inventories, the inventories summary immediately identifies career areas for students to further explore occupations and related majors. All search results can be saved and organized in the career portfolio section. Students are encouraged to bring their inventories summary to discuss with a career counselor at the Student Counseling Service if further assistance with career exploration is desired.
