Programs for Academic Success Skills (PASS) Events - Fall 2009

Programs for Academic Success Skills (PASS) can help you change for the better. Our counselors and resources will assist you in learning
study and testing habits that contribute to academic success. Visit the

All groups and workshops meet in Cain
Hall, unless otherwise noted. Please pre-register for
workshops and counseling.

Assessment of Study Skills Using the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI)
- The LASSI measures awareness about and use of learning and study strategies. It provides information about study
skills strengths and weaknesses in comparison to other college students. Results of the measure can be used to develop
techniques for improving study strategies. Online modules are available to help remediate study skills deficits. Time
required to take the LASSI is approximately 30 minutes. Interpretation of the measure by a counselor is required. To take
the LASSI and schedule the interpretation workshop, register for
service.
Pre-registration for test interpretation is necessary, and the LASSI must be completed 3 business days prior to the
interpretation session. The LASSI interpretation workshop is a half hour long. Students arriving late will not be
admitted due to the brevity of the workshop.

It’s that time of year again. All or nothing. Late nights; way too much coffee. No sleep, extreme stress and general brain
drain. Or does it have to be that way? This workshop describes how to attack finals in a balanced approach. Understanding the
finals “game” is the one sure way to make the finals time just another ordinary week in college.

Motivated to improve you academic performance but find it difficult to be consistent in your efforts? Join this support
group and learn effective study strategies, and get support from others. Topics may include procrastination and building
academic confidence. An initial appointment with an academic counselor is required.

- Provide weekly support and accountability for students seeking to improve academic performance.
- Provide information on general study skills and assess for additional concerns the group may have that need to be addressed.
- Assist group members in connecting to information covered in group and applying new strategies.

This is a group designed to help students whose midterm grades are lower than expected. It's not too late to learn some
positive study strategies and see a big impact on semester grades. Topics may include test preparation, avoiding distractions,
and time management. An initial appointment with a counselor is required.

- Provide weekly support for students who present with academic difficulties after mid-term exams.
- Provide information on general study skills and assess for additional concerns the group may have that need to be addressed.
- Assist group members in connecting to information covered in group and applying new strategies.

November 3 - December 8

This is a 9 week group designed specifically for incoming freshman students who face the transition to
college life. The Insider's Guide group will assist students in identifying successful study strategies, effective time
management techniques as well as how to manage the various demands of university life so there is time for academics, social
life, and fun.
Specific objectives:
- Provide weekly support for students who are in their first year of college and transitioning to college life.
- Provide information on effective study skills and assess for additional concerns the group may have that need to be addressed.
- Help students identify how college is different from high school and to effectively utilize campus resources.
- Assist group member in connecting to information covered in group and applying new strategies.

This group is for graduate students struggling with the process of writing a thesis or dissertation. Group topics include
issues of competence, procrastination, anxiety, goal-setting, and bureaucratic struggles.

Do you sometimes feel that no one back home understands what you are going through? Do you feel lost trying to figure out
how to be in college? This group is for students who are the first in their immediate family to attend college. It provides
support, understanding, and helpful suggestions to help students deal with the family and academic challenges unique to first
generation college students. Screening is required to participate in this group.

Anxiety causes, and is caused by, academic stress. Test anxiety is a good example of this. Biofeedback is a technique that can
be helpful in understanding and controlling your anxiety so that it does not interfere with your academic performance.
Alternating weeks until the end of October. Workshops offered both days every week starting in November.

Career Counseling & Testing Services
provide services designed to help students who are in the initial stages of career exploration and choosing a major.
A variety of programs are provided to help students with the career choice process. Visit the
Academic & Career Resource Center for more information.

Hall, unless otherwise noted. Some workshops require testing. All workshops require
pre-registration.
During this interactive workshop, you will increase your understanding of the “True Colors” of your personality. You
will identify your natural gifts and talents, which can be used in many different occupations. You will also identify your
true values—ideas, activities, and things you prize or regard highly. Finally, you will identify potential careers that
appeal to your true colors and use your preferred talents. An added benefit is increased understanding of personalities that
differ from yours.

* This workshop requires a minimum of 25 participants; if fewer than 25 are registered for the workshop one business day
before it is scheduled, the workshop will be cancelled.
DISCOVER is an interactive web-based career planning program. This introductory workshop will teach you how to effectively
utilize features of the DISCOVER program for career exploration and occupational research.

DISCOVER is a web-based tool for career exploration and development. The program allows you to learn about
yourself, what types of careers match your interests and abilities and what educational path is needed to pursue those
careers. Students can learn more about this program by attending the DISCOVER Workshop.
No career groups are offered during the Fall 2009 semester.
