QPR For Suicide Prevention

SURVEYS AND STUDIES HAVE FOUND . . .

  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students.
  • Up to 5% of college students had attempted suicide while in college.
  • 9.5% of the college students surveyed had seriously contemplated or threatened suicide.
  • One college student in twelve had made a suicide plan.
Three A&M student died by suicide in 2004 and two student suicides occurred in 2005.


TWO HOURS OF CERTIFIED QPR GATEKEEPER TRAINING TEACHES YOU . . .

  • How to recognize the signs that someone may be at risk for suicide,
  • What to do or say (or not do or say) if you think someone might be at risk for suicide,
  • Where and how to refer someone who is depressed or considering suicide
QPR stands for Question, Persuade, & Refer, the three skills you learn as a QPR Gatekeeper.

Here's how to become a QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper

Please note:
  • Those attending QPR must be able to attend the enitire two hour session.
  • Only A&M faculty or staff members or currently enrolled A&M students may attend.
  • Please let us know of any needed ADA special accommodations when you register.
If YOU as an individual want to attend an "open" QPR Gatekeeper Training session, preregistration is required due to limited space. To pre-register, email QPR@scs.tamu.edu and please put "QPR training wanted" as well as the training date you're requesting in the subject line (click here for a current list of training sessions).
  • A&M EMPLOYEES must include email address, phone, department/office, and position/title in the email.
  • A&M STUDENTS must include email address, phone, major and classification in the email.
If YOUR GROUP (A&M department, office or recognized student organization) would like to schedule its own QPR Gatekeeper Training…

When you click below on "request a presentation," be sure to:
  • Select QPR Gatekeeper Training for both the "Type of Outreach" and the "Primary Topic"
  • Select 2 hours as the "Desired Length of Presentation" (2 hours is the REQUIRED length).
