The Student Counseling Service (SCS) is primarily a counseling service. Typically, the most effective treatments are experienced by the combination of counseling and psychiatric services. Consequently, referrals for psychiatric services generally are made by the student’s SCS counselor.
Psychiatric services include consultation and outpatient treatment of common psychiatric conditions. The SCS does not offer hospital care or intensive outpatient psychiatric care. Our psychiatrists are available during normal business hours (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday). We do not provide on-call psychiatric coverage during evenings or weekends.
After the evaluation is complete, the psychiatrist will discuss treatment options, including whether we expect that you can be safely and appropriately treated in this setting. Some students require more intense treatment than we can provide and are referred for off-campus services.
You are encouraged to ask the psychiatrist questions you might have about your treatment and let us know of any concerns you may have. You are an important member of your "treatment team" and we value your input.
