History & Mission of the SCS Practicum Program
Beginning with the first internship group in 1977, the Texas A&M Student Counseling Service has
maintained a commitment to training is second only to our primary mission of providing service to students.
The practicum program at SCS was originally begun to support the APA approved internship program by providing
students for interns to supervise as part of their training. While the practicum students continue to be
supervised by predoctoral interns, the program that exists today has evolved into an important and valuable
training component in its own right. Today, the members of the SCS staff are involved in providing training
and support for the practicum program. Dr. James Deegear coordinates the activities of the
program. The Training Director and training committee are responsible for program oversight, support and
direction of the practicum program.
The mission of the practicum program is to provide a high quality training experience to predoctoral
students in counseling and clinical psychology. The structure of the training program is designed to provide
experiences that will prepare students for their internship year.
